Joy and happiness express the feeling of gladness. While Happiness is dependent on something that is seen or felt. For instance, when something is given to you, you are happy. When your house rent and other bills are paid, you are happy. When you receive a gift, you are happy. When your prayers are answered, you are likely to be happy. Etc. However, this happiness is triggered by something which means that if that “trigger” doesn’t occur, there might not be an expression of happiness.
Joy, on the other hand, is not dependent on happenings. It springs from the inside to the outside. It is not controlled by events or happenings. It is stronger than happiness. It is not short-lived but lasts longer than happiness no matter the circumstance and situation. Joy is more spiritual than physical. It comes from the assurance of salvation and the knowledge that God loves you. This is why the Bible says in (Nehemiah 8:10). The joy of the Lord is your strength.
A typical example is a phone which has some airtime and a battery life. When the airtime is exhausted, you can still use the phone but when the battery is down and out, no matter how much airtime you have, you cannot use the phone anymore. The phone becomes useless until the battery is charged up again. In like manner, the joy of the Lord is our battery. When there is no joy, you become empty and weak. The joy of the Lord is the strength of a child of God. Therefore, guard your joy jealously so it won’t be tampered with. When there is joy, you forgive easily, tolerate people and turn procrastination into joy. A joyful person cannot be controlled by the environment.
This joy can be gotten from the Holy Spirit who is the giver of joy and by staying in the presence of God. Sin, anger, disobedience and the likes make one lose his/her joy. Be careful and stay joyful always. Do not allow anyone or the enemy to determine when you will be joyful.
