Children are a heritage of the Lord. They don’t just come as a result of the coming together of a male and female adult as husband and wife. It is God that gives children. And as such, the biological parents of any child or children are just their caretakers and of the same in the earthly realm.
Psalms 127:3, “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward”.
Therefore, God desires that parents raise them in the pathway of righteous. The bible says in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it”.
First of all, parents should discover and understand that they are caretakers, even though they gave birth to their children. This should guide them on how to raise them. This is because, whatever they do at the forming years of their children would go a long way in shaping and structuring their way of life. This was why Paul told Timothy to be an example of the believer in words, actions, etc.
1 Timothy 4:12 “……but be thou an example of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity”.
The lifestyle of parents also affects their children.
TRAINING A CHILD INVLOVES:
Words: If a father of a child usually talks harshly and curse people around him, particularly his wife, the child tends to learn how to talk harshly too or even call people names like; idiot, animal etc. That child or the children of such parents are not being raised godly.
Conversations: If a mother is a gossip and talks always and even lie, she will likely raise children that will look and act like her. However, if she is a woman who bridles her tongue and talks softly knowing that she lives for God and her life affects her children, she would raise godly children who are preserved.
Charity: A home void of love would end up raising hostile children because the atmosphere where they grew up was harsh and hostile.
Spirituality: Man is a spirit being. Being spiritual means to be in full cognizance of God. Therefore, raising godly children involves raising them spiritually. A child raised spiritually, will automatically be godly.
In faith: It is necessary to train children in faith. This will enable them to trust in God and not to rely entirely on their parents, so that they will know that God is the provider, who provides for their parents and their parents in turn provides for them.
In purity: Parents who live in immorality cannot raise godly children. Purity includes not getting involved in shady businesses.
Parents that must raise godly children would be an example and live an exemplary life.
